Bersih 5: Ambiga arrives, crowd begins to swell

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Bersih chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan arrived at the Bangsar LRT station for the Bersih 5 rally to loud cheers from yellow-shirted supporters.

“Today is a good day and everyone’s support here has given us hope,” she said.

The number of Bersih supporters at the Bangsar LRT station had swelled as of 9.15am.

Rally goers started roaring to chants of “Bersih, Bersih, Bersih” as they waited to begin their march to Dataran Merdeka.

Earlier, a group in the purple of the “Bersih security unit” arrived at the station.

Isaiah Jacob, 50, who was born with only one leg, said he was ready to make the long walk from Bangsar LRT to Dataran Merdeka.

“Even though I am disabled, I consider myself a normal person and as a Malaysian, I have a responsibility to walk for a new administration and a better Malaysia,” said Jacob, who came by himself.

“I’ve been coming for all the Bersih rallies since the first one (in 2007),” he added.
