BUDGET 2017 tabled on Friday in Parliament is generally hailed as a “social budget” that addresses the concerns of low-income groups, and is also seen as a “pre-election” budget to placate the country’s 1.6 million civil servants by plying them with more benefits and handouts.
Malaysia must hold its 14th general election within the next 20 months, and the manner in which this Budget allocates funds for spending next year reflects a certain degree of political reality.
