KOTA KINABALU: A farmer has filed a suit against a businessman and the Sabah government over land clearing works which he claims was polluting the Moyog River, the main water source for the state’s west coast.
In his suit filed by his lawyer Marcel Jude Joseph at the Kota Kinabalu High Court registry yesterday, Elias Randi Payu, 54, also claimed that the clearing works had caused other environmental problems.
Elias named businessman Oii Say Tuan and state agencies including the Sabah Environmental Protection Department as well as the Lands and Survey Department as defendants.
In his statement of claim, Elias said that he had discovered the land clearing activities near Kampung Mongkusilad in November 2014.
He claimed that the land clearing works had resulted in siltation of the Moyog river as well as its tributaries.
Elias, a member of the Tagal or environmental conservation committee of Kampung Moyog, also claimed that the pollution had affected recreational areas along the river.
He sought damages from the eight defendants.
