SIBU: The DAP-held Dudong seat is one of 70 seats which Barisan Nasional is targeting to win in the election.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem said he was optimistic of wresting the seat from the Opposition which failed to bring development to the area during the last five years.

Incumbent Yap Hoi Liong of DAP won the seat after beating his closest opponent, Datuk Tiong Thai King, of Barisan in the last election by a mere 317 votes in a three-cornered fight.

This election will see five contestants - Yap, Tiong, Mary Ting of STAR, and Independent candidates Datuk Seri Dr Benny Lee and Casper Kayong.

Lee was Dudong SUPP branch vice-chairman. He had resigned from the party to contest in the election.

Adenan said of the total 82 seats up for grabs, Barisan is confident of winning in 70 constituencies.

"Tiong is among them not Benny Lee. Lee will lose. DAP will also lose as I have visited the whole state where I know the rakyat still believe in BN," said Adenan at a meet-the-people session at Rumah Philip Kayak Brandah in Durin about 45 minutes drive from Sibu on Saturday.

Adenan said although Barisan lost the seat in the last election, "this time we will win as the rakyat know that during the last five years, DAP could not bring anything to the area."

Adenan wanted the people in the constituency to look forward now starting with this election.
