KUALA LUMPUR: There are no plans to close vernacular schools to make way for national schools, said the Education Ministry.
Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said in a written reply in Parliament Thursday that Section 28 of the Education Act stipulates an allocation for the building and maintaining of vernacular schools.
"However, schools that have been labelled as Sekolah Kurang Murid (under-enrolled schools), and have not shown any improvement in enrolment in two years can be closed by the Ministry.
"The Ministry has the right to hand over its operations to another school which has more potential in enrolling pupils," he said.
He was responding to questions by Putatan MP Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh on the stand of the Ministry about vernacular schools.
