KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 3,677 police officers were nabbed for getting involved in criminal activities since 2010, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).
Of that number, only 521 officers were brought to court while another 2,312 had investigations against them dropped. Another 844 are still being probed for involvement in crime, he said in response to a question posed by Gobind Singh Deo (DAP – Puchong).
He said that despite this, the police’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) was being proactive in weeding out bad apples from the force.
“They conduct surprise checks on front liners in the field, and go undercover be it physically or over the phone to ensure that field officers are adhering to the law and instructions,” he said.
Officers are also subjected to random urine tests to prevent drug abuse.
Acknowledging that corruption was also a problem in the police, Ahmad Zahid said the Ministry has been beating the drum of an anti-graft campaign in the force, by offering certificates to officers who turn down bribes, while anti-bribery posters in police stations serve as daily reminders to the public not to bribe cops.
The police have also formed a religious and counselling division and are looking into launching a discipline and drug control system to rein in bad cops, said Zahid.
