KOTA BARU: Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir (pic) is unfazed by calls for him to be sacked from Umno, and continues to attend invites from party members to talk on the current political situation in the country.
At a ceramah in Bunut Payong here on Monday, the embattled former Kedah mentri besar said he was merely exercising his right to speak out on party matters.
Mukhriz said Umno was in such dire straits to the extent that his father, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was willing to sit on the same table with his political nemesis Lim Kit Siang to sign the Citizens' Declaration.
"What I cannot understand is that there are those who are still blind to the fact that Umno is at its lowest ebb. It is like a house on fire but they are ignoring the situation just to please certain leaders," he added.
"I am not against Umno but against the party president, and if this continues I think Umno and Barisan Nasional will have trouble winning the 14th general election," he said, adding that he does not care if he is removed from the party.
He stressed that Umno must use the proper methods within the party constitution to sack or suspend office bearers, "unlike what happened to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, whose suspension was decided by a handful of top leaders".
To a question, Mukhriz said the call to remove his father as Proton Berhad and Perdana Leadership Foundation chairman was a personal vendetta because he was chosen to helm the institutions in capacity as the former prime minister.
