GEORGE TOWN: Penang Port Sdn Bhd will reduce the number of ferries plying between the island and mainland from the current four to three from Jan 1. It will also reduce the operating hours of the vessels.
Currently, Penang Port operates a fleet of four ferries on a daily basis with 20 to 30-minute arrival intervals from 5.20am to 10pm and one ferry from 10pm to 1am with arrival intervals of 40 minutes.
The first ferry departs the island at 5.40am while the last ferry leaves at 1am. From the mainland, the first ferry departs at 5.20am while the last ferry leaves at 12.40am.
Penang Port Corporate Services and Support Division senior general manager Rosihan Adi Baharuddin said the first ferry would leave the island at 6.30am and the last at 11.30pm under the new schedule from Jan 1.
From the mainland, the first ferry will leave at 6.30am and the last one at 11pm, he said in a statement Wednesday.
He said the three ferries would run on intervals of between 20 and 30 minutes during peak hours at both terminals while the interval would be reduced to an hour from 8.20pm onwards.
A spokesman of the company said the reason for the reduction in the number of ferries and operating hours was due to the decline in the number of vehicles using the ferries.
