KUALA LUMPUR: The challenge for developers to design new mobile applications in 24 hours is back.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and American telecommunications giant, AT&T, are bringing back Malaysia Developers’ Day,

So if you have an idea for an app that will change the world, then be at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from Sept 17 to 19 and stand a chance to win prizes.

MCMC content and applications director Laurel Tan said this year’s competition would be held with the inaugural KL Converge! digital showcase.

“Unlike last year where it was only open to Malaysians, we are inviting creative minds from 14 Asian countries to compete in three categories, under the theme ‘Building a Digital Ecosystem.’

“The categories include best apps for Community Service, Smart City and Commercialisation,” she told The Star. Over 200 developers are expected to join the competition.

The winning team from each category would be given a USD1,000 (RM3,196) prize while the team with the best app of the competition will be awarded the USD10,000 (RM31,967) grand prize.

MCMC and AT&T will provide the resources, education and networking structure to create apps more quickly and at lower cost.

Participants will have access to AT&T’s Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), already built-out services that tap into the power of AT&T’s network.

Developers can quickly plug them into their apps for added functionality, such as speech-to-text.

“This is a fantastic platform for aspiring developers to learn. By expanding this event to other countries, we hope to see more innovation and creativity to drive this region forward," she said.

The competition starts on Sept 17, with a special keynote address by United States Ambassador Joseph Yu.

Teams will then present their apps at the KL Converge! Gala Dinner on Sept 19.
