PETALING JAYA: A taxi driver and an ardent animal lover touched thousands of hearts when he offered on his Facebook page a ride for ‘any blind man with a guide dog.’
Mohd Kamil Affendy Hashim, 32, was inspired to post his phone number after watching a short film directed by Jason Lim entitled ‘Are You Blind’ that related how sight-impaired businessman Stevens Chan and his seeing eye dog Lashawn were always chased out of shopping malls and prevented from boarding taxis and buses.
Mohd Kamil Affendy, also known as Eddie, also posted the message: “I’m Malay and a Muslim. A taxi driver in KL. I stay in Setapak. I support guide dogs. Any blind man with a guide dog who needs a ride, their family and friends can always SMS or WhatsApp me.”
“PS: Every religion in this world taught us to be kind to everyone, in any condition, including animals,” he said.
Netizens found it heart-warming, with Liew Chee Khoi commenting: “Let’s give him A LOT of business... All call him for taxi ride.”
Another, Zainal Nizar posted “God bless you, brother”, while Jayanathan Jayabalan noted “Ini baru 1Malaysia (Now this is 1Malaysia).”
Chan who is the founder and CEO of the Malaysian chapter of social business enterprise Dialogue in the Dark, lost his sight to glaucoma seven years ago
Chan said that hearing of such support is always very encouraging.
Chan, who would be leaving for an international conference, said he hoped to meet Eddie upon his return.
Land Public Transport Commission chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said guide dogs are allowed on public transport when assisting the disabled community.
This was echoed by deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi, who said animal safety by-laws have to be followed in the event of the dogs attacking people.
Eddie welcomes donations of pet food for his furry wards and anyone who uses a guide dog and needs a lift.
