NEW DELHI: The Malaysian Consulate-General in Chennai, Tamil Nadu is helping 29 Malaysian medical students stranded in flood-hit Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
"It is understood that the students went there for a holiday for semester break.
"We have established contact with them through social media, friends and some, directly. All of them are safe," said Consul-General Chitra Devi Ramiah.
She said the students, comprising 13 women and 16 men are stranded at two locations, namely Srinagar and Pahalgam.
"We have contacted the police and the minister of external affairs. We are working closely with the relevant departments to help our students exit the place safely," she told Bernama on Monday.
Out of the 29 medical students from the southern states, 28 are government-sponsored.
According to Wisma Putra, the students are from the Manipal Medical Campus in the state of Karnataka, mainly sponsored by JPA and MARA, as well as private students.
The ministry reiterates it is important for Malaysian students abroad to engage themselves with Malaysian embassies of the respective countries, as well as reporting their travel out of the assigned state.
This will assist the embassy in providing the required consular assistance to Malaysians abroad.
The devastating flood across the Himalayan region - the worst in the last 50 years - has so far, claimed 150 lives.
