Asli: Spirit of volunteerism should not be stifled

KUALA LUMPUR: Any action against the Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) must not stifle the spirit of volunteerism although the legality of the organisation needs to be looked into, said the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli).

“Many are working to promote the spirit of volunteerism in this country and we must not kill it,” said Asli CEO Tan Sri Dr Michael Yeoh.

The circumstances that led to the setting up of the PPS also needed to be explored, he said at a press conference yesterday to announce the National Unity Forum which was happening today.

He said that if PPS was trying to do community work, it was a good role but it had to be done in a proper manner and according to the provisions of law.

The Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has called the PPS an illegal organisation because it is not on the Registrar of Societies’ list while the Penang state government has defended the unit as its own initiative.
