PAS V-P Husam: Unity govt with Umno "difficult and impossible"

PETALING JAYA: Forming a PAS-Umno unity government in Selangor "is not only difficult but impossible," said PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa.

"Not only in terms of numbers but also in principle, execution and the short-term and long-term effects and the dynamism of all parties involved," he said in a statement.

Husam said the unity government was "bait" - part of an agenda by the party's arch-rival, Umno, namely the "Deputy Prime Minister's team" who wanted to control a particular institution within PAS.

The bigger picture, he said, was for Umno to secure two-thirds majority in Parliament when it holds control of PAS constituencies nationwide. This would favour Umno in the upcoming redelineation exercise.

Umno and its component parties in Barisan have 134 seats in Parliament and PAS has 21 seats. With the additional seats from PAS, Barisan would secure more than two-thirds majority of 148 to pave way for the redelineation exercise.

"Selangor is their closest bait. They will come up with all sorts of tricks to tear Pakatan Rakyat apart. If PAS leaves, they would think it is easier for them to woo us," Husam said.

Husam, who is Salor assemblyman, brushed aside the possibility of several PKR assemblymen joining PAS to form a unity government with Umno, saying that the move would require a stringent procedure.

"PAS central committee would have to endorse any move to bring in former PKR assemblyman to obtain the numbers to form a unity government.

"I don't see their membership being approved by the central committee. There are many reasons why I feel this way but I don't think I should explain it here.

"The main thing is, their memberships will not be accepted. For their memberships to be brought into the central committee, they first have to resign from their party.

"I don't think any PKR leader would take that risk," he said.

PAS is currently at odds with its Pakatan Rakyat partners, DAP and PKR, in Selangor over the choice of the new Selangor mentri besar, following the sacking of Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim from PKR.
