Final touches: Participants practising their routine for
the Merdeka celebration.
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 4,800 people, including schoolchildren and armed forces personnel, took part in a five-hour rehearsal of the National Day parade here.
Yesterday’s rehearsal, which saw most of the major roads surrounding Dataran Merdeka closed to traffic, was attended by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
The year’s Merdeka celebration is themed Di Sini Lahirnya Sebuah Cinta (Here a Love Is Born). The 4,832 participants waited patiently from dawn to start their rehearsal, the second in a three-day practice.
“We will have prayers and a silent moment before the procession in respect of the MH17 victims but the celebrations have to go on because we want to heighten the display of patriotism among the people,” he said.
Among the highlights of the celebration would be the Upin and Ipin animation which Ahmad Shabery said was the pride of the country and a new approach to the celebrations.
“Upin and Ipin are the intellectual property of this country and we want to show we have grown and developed to where it is today,” he added.
