JOHOR BARU: After knocking down and dragging a policeman for about 50m in a stolen lorry, a man tried to escape but collapsed and died minutes later.
The policeman survived with minor injuries on his right arm and shoulder.
During the incident yesterday, personnel from the Motorcycle Patrolling Unit spotted the man, in his 30s, driving a white Daihatsu lorry on Jalan Seri Impian 1, Taman Impian Emas, here at around 3.40am.
Johor Baru (North) OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Khamsani Abdul Rahman said that the personnel had ordered the driver to stop the vehicle.
“However, the man did not cooperate and sped off,” he said, adding that this led to a chase by the policemen for about 220m to the gates of the Southern College.
“At the college, he knocked down one of our personnel with his lorry. The driver then lost control of the vehicle before it turned turtle at a road shoulder,” he said.
The driver, said ACP Mohd Khamsani, managed to crawl out from under the lorry and tried to flee on foot.
“However, when our personnel caught up with the driver not long after, he complained of shortness of breath before collapsing.”
ACP Mohd Khamsani said although an ambulance rushed to the scene, the paramedics confirmed that the driver died on the spot.
“Checks on the driver found that he had previous criminal records and was wanted by the police,” he said.
“We also found an enforcement card from the Defence Ministry’s special branch intelligence unit,” he said, adding that the card did not belong to the deceased.
The police also recovered a fake pistol with two bullets and tools believed to have been used by the man to carry out car thefts.
“Checks on the lorry revealed that the vehicle had been stolen hours earlier,” he said, adding that the body was sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for a post-mortem.
