Foreign student nabbed with RM500,000 in drugs

KUALA LUMPUR: A Nigerian student who is believed to be a distributor was detained with drugs worth RM500,000 at his rented apartment in Bukit Jalil here.

Police arrested the 27-year-old, suspected to be a member of an international drug trafficking syndicate, during a raid on the apartment on Friday.

They found 3.19kg in drugs believed to be methamphetamine (syabu) on him. Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Abd Rahim Othman said police seized two digital weighing scales and three plastic packages containing 445gm of drugs believed to be syabu that were hidden in a luggage bag.

There was also a knapsack with three plastic packages containing another 2.7kg of drugs, believed to be syabu.

ACP Abd Rahim said police also seized a wallet with a student card that belonged to the suspect and two handphones.

Initial investigations revealed that the Nigerian, who was in Malaysia on a student visa, lived alone in the apartment which he had been renting for the past four months.

“We believe the drugs were meant for distribution in neighbouring countries,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

Apparently, the suspect brought in the drugs from his home country using a courier service.

During interrogation, ACP Abd Rahim said the suspect claimed that he was studying at a private college here.
