LAHAD DATU: A notorious squatter settlement was raided in a pre-dawn operation with authorities detaining 925 people following a local council’s decision to demolish illegal houses.
The eight-hour operation from 2.30am yesterday under Ops Gasak came two days after police launched a massive air and sea hunt for three intruders in the waters off Semporna that borders Lahad Datu and Kunak districts in the east coast.
Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) commander Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said those detained had failed to produce identification or travel documents.
“We have also identified 400 squatter houses which will be demolished later,” he said.
Rashid said this was the largest raid after the restructuring of Esscom on July 15.
