Man charged with killing Britons

KUCHING: A 23-year-old fishmonger has been charged in a magistrate’s court here with the murder of two British medical students who were here on work placement.

Zulkipli Abdullah, the main suspect in the case, was accused of killing Aidan Brunger and Neil Dalton, both 22, in Abell Road at between 4.10am and 4.15am on Aug 6.

Zulkipli, who was unrepresented, now faces the mandatory death sentence under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The charge was read in front of magistrate Portia Tham, who fixed Sept 19 for mention and ordered Zulkipli to be remanded until then.

The accused was one of the five suspects who had been arrested in connection with the murder.

The other four, aged between 19 and 55, were released on police bonds of RM20,000 each with an undertaking to appear in court to give evidence in the case.

Newcastle University students Brunger and Dalton were found dead with stab wounds just two days before their six-week work placement at the Sarawak General Hospital was due to end.

Three suspects, including Zulkipli, were arrested at 6am on the same day while the fourth was picked up at 4.45pm that afternoon. The last suspect was detained on Aug 8.

DPP Mirza Mohamad appeared for the prosecution.
