KUALA LUMPUR: Be a volunteer and help the community and the country, says MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
He said such efforts are part of the party’s transformation plan and the key to make MCA a stronger party.
“The plan is not only about reaching out to members, but also to instill love for the party and promoting the spirit of volunteerism,” he told reporters after attending the Selangor Wanita MCA’s AGM and 40th anniversary at Wisma MCA here yesterday.
Liow, who is also Transport Minister, said MCA wanted to ensure that members had a platform to contribute to the party and encouraged them to share their ideas.
“In the past, we found that many members were unable to contribute via party channels. We want to mobilise our members as volunteers,” he added.
Liow said the MCA had a strong network of about 4,000 branches nationwide. But, he urged the party’s members to step up to get things moving.
He also said although the party had lost in the last general election, it was able to pick itself up swiftly.
“So, if there are any state elections or by-elections, we will be ready,” said Liow, who is Selangor MCA chairman.
On the Selangor Mentri Besar crisis, Liow said although PKR, DAP and PAS are “sleeping on the same pillow, they are dreaming about different things.”
“They are only championing their own interests and ignoring the people. The MB crisis is now at a critical level, where the three parties are trading blows at each other.
“MCA is saddened by this because the people’s interests seem to be sidelined by their infighting,” he said, citing issues like the water supply problem and high cost of living that should be the main concern of the state government.
“We hope they will be able to settle this quickly and not let the rakyat suffer,” he added.
