PETALING JAYA: A shortage of lorry drivers is imminent, according to the association concerned.
Pan-Malaysia Lorry Owners Association president Jong Foh Jit said the Government should step in to tackle the problem.
He said transport-related companies were facing a 20-30% driver shortage, forcing some to downsize their operations.
He suggested that foreigners be allowed to take up such jobs, and that special training or “promotional” fees be approved to encourage the young to apply for lorry driving licences.
Jong said some quarters here did not believe that a lorry driver shortage would occur, adding that they based this on “flawed data”.
He said the data did not reflect on retired drivers and those who had found other jobs.
Jong said the association had asked for a dialogue with Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai to discuss the issue.
