Family and friends mourn for family of three

PETALING JAYA: “Dear Matthew, hope you have a great time in heaven. We really miss you.”

This was among the many notes written by nine-year-old Matthew Ezekial Sivagnanam’s school friends as they mourned his death.

Matthew and his parents, Shell employee Paul Sivagnanam and lecturer Mabel, were killed when Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine on July 17.

Ribbons were tied along the school fence to pay tribute to the boy.

Loving family: Mabel cuddling Matthew in a photo that has been uploaded onto Facebook.

“RIP Matthew. The school won’t be the same without you. You were a great school member,” another student wrote.

The families of Paul and Mabel paid tribute to their loved ones in a memoriam yesterday, which included a picture of the smiling family of three.

They described Paul, one of the four Shell employees killed in the crash, as one who was loved for his carefree nature, calmness and wit.

“And a radiant smile to be remembered forever,” the tributes stated.

Mabel, they said, was full of love and a pillar of strength who was always willing to help others.

“With a loving heart for family and friends. For God was her constant guide.”

As for Matthew, they wrote: “A short life lived with vivacious innocent energy.”

Friends of the family also poured out their grief on social media.

Puvan Narayanan wrote on Facebook: “Truly devastated. Lost a wonderful and amazing family in MH17 disaster. May you rest in peace, Mabel, Paul and darling Matthew. You will always be in our hearts.”

Mabel’s friend Kyna Saidin wrote that she would never forget the smiles and laughter they shared together.

“To my loving friend. May you rest in peace with your loved ones. You are a woman, a wife and a mother with great heart; a loving and caring friend. You, Paul and Matthew will always (be) in our hearts. May you rest in peace,” she wrote on Facebook.

P. Shobha Menon also expressed sadness over their deaths.

“Ms Mabel, Paul & Matthew, I can’t believe that you have left us. Your time here was so brief. You are deeply missed. You will always be in our prayers.”

The Church of the Divine Mercy in Shah Alam, which the Sivagnanams attended, is holding a private memorial service for the family tomorrow.
