PAS firm against PKR’s move to replace sitting Selangor MB

PETALING JAYA: Selangor PAS is firm against PKR’s decision to replace sitting Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

Its state chief Iskandar Abdul Samad said they had informed the central party leadership of their stand against PKR’s plan to replace Khalid with party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

“We do not see the rationale behind replacing Khalid at this juncture,” he said.

Iskandar, who is also the Chempaka assemblyman, said this in response to PKR’s move to obtain Pakatan Rakyat consensus following its leadership council’s decision to endorse Dr Wan Azizah to replace Khalid.

Party adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who chaired the meeting on Monday, said they would formally nominate Dr Wan Azizah as the sole candidate as new mentri besar at the Pakatan leadership council meeting today.

Iskandar said the move to replace Khalid was unnecessary and that the state PAS had neither discussed nor agreed to PKR’s plan.

Anwar had earlier on Friday night informed the Selangor PKR division chiefs and elected representative of his intention to replace Khalid with his wife.

He had also shot down a proposal by supporters of PKR deputy president Azmin Ali to name another potential, insisting that they would nominate only one candidate.

Anwar had told a press conference on Monday night that PAS and DAP were agreeable to the mentri besar transition in Selangor, but they had yet to formerly discuss the potential candidate to replace Khalid.

Anwar claimed that appointing Dr Wan Azizah as the new mentri besar would forge unity in PKR and Pakatan.

“Wan Azizah can stabilise Pakatan Rakyat in Selangor,” he said.

Acknowledging that Khalid had performed well, Anwar said a leadership change was however inevitable in view of a host of controversies.

The controversies include the State Religious Department’s (Jais) seizure of Malay bible bearing the word Allah, Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) protests, discord over the water asset restructuring exercise and internal power struggle dividing the party.

Claiming that the issues in Selangor had reached boiling point, Anwar said they had to take additional measures to address contentious issues, allay public anxiety, and regain public confidence in Pakatan.
