14 hurt by firecrackers in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU: A total of 14 reports of firework-related injuries were reported in Terengganu thus far in this festive season.

“The victims comprised of children and teenagers,” said state CID chief ACP Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Hamzah.

He said most of the injuries were a result of children engaged in modifying firecrackers to make them “lethal”.

“They wanted the explosions to sound louder,” he said.

“Unfortunately, these intentions backfire,” ACP Wan Abdul Aziz said at a press conference here.

There were also injuries that were caused when children pulled pranks on their friends, he said.

“Sometimes, they drop a firecracker into a friend’s pocket,” added ACP Wan Abdul Aziz.

He urged parents not to buy firecrackers for their children.

“They must not compromise on this issue as lives of people, especially their children, could be in danger,” he warned.

ACP Wan Abdul Aziz said from June 29 to now, Terengganu police had seized stocks of over RM39,000 worth of fireworks and arrested 14 people.

“Most of the suspects were arrested at their homes where the fireworks were kept hidden.”
