PETALING JAYA: Looters are reported to have descended on the Ukrainian field where Flight MH17 crashed and ransacked victims’ possessions.
According to witnesses, many pieces of luggage that were pulled from the charred crime scene had already been opened and rifled through, USA Today said.
The daily also said that the lack of security in the area likely encouraged the “heartless” ransacking.
The scene, it added, had not been cordoned off and unidentified men were allowed to walk into the area.
Britain’s Daily Mail reported Australian journalist Demjin Doroschenko as saying there was evidence of looting on site.
According to the Australian website news.com.au, Doroschenko – who has been covering the Ukraine-Russia conflict for the past months – found not one wallet contained money while he was going through some of the passengers’ belongings to retrieve personal information on Australian victims.
The adviser to the Ukrainian Internal Affairs Minister, Anton Gerashchenko, said that “terrorists” had begun collecting valuables of the victims, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
According to Reuters, separatist leader Aleksander Borodai said they had not moved anything on the crash site.
