PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s step-grandmother Puan Sri Siti Amirah (pic) was one of the 43 Malaysians who perished in the Flight MH17 tragedy.
According to a family member, the 83-year-old was travelling alone back to Indonesia from Amsterdam.
“She intended to transit at Kuala Lumpur International Airport,” said Datin Dr Faridah Abdullah.
Siti was Tan Sri Mohammad Noah Omar’s second wife. Noah, who died in 1990, was Najib’s grandfather.
“She was a very, very nice lady. A kind-hearted, beautiful woman. She was a homemaker who looked after my grandfather very well,” she said.
“We called her ibu (mother),” Dr Faridah told The Star yesterday.
Dr Faridah, who is also chairman of the Mohammad Noah Foundation, said Siti travelled to Amsterdam to holiday with her only daughter from her first marriage.
She added that Siti’s daughter was supposed to have followed her mother back.
“However, she couldn’t get on the same flight,” she said.
She said Siti – a native Indonesian – and her daughter were planning to spend Hari Raya in Jogjakarta.
“She had her own family in Amsterdam, and would go there and come back off-and-on,” said Dr Faridah. “She visited Malaysia very regularly and loved Malaysia.”
