IPOH: Operation theatres in Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital were forced to close after a water pipe burst along Jalan Hospital in front of the hospital and SMK Anderson.
A hospital source said the hour-long water disruption occurred at about 11am yesterday.
“All operations scheduled after 11am had to be cancelled.
“Even though we have our own storage of water in case of emergency, it can only last for three hours and would only be enough to keep air-conditioners running in all 10 operation theatres,” he said.
He added that the water supply was reinstated eventually and the hospital was given the green light by authorities to continue with the planned operations.
“This is not possible now because the patients have already been given food and they are usually required to fast for at least six hours before any form of surgery.
“By the time another six hours have passed, the operation theatres would already be closed for the day,” he said, adding that everything had been thrown off schedule, especially since today is a public holiday.
Thankfully, he said there were no patients whose lives would have been in immediate danger should their operation be postponed.
A Perak Water Board (LAP) spokesman said the 30-year-old pipe had burst because it could no longer withhold the water pressure.
Hospital director Dr Raja Lope Ahmad Raja Ariffin said the matter had already been settled and did not comment any further.
