PETALING JAYA: Frustrated Malaysian netizens criticised Brazil’s approach after the football powerhouse and home nation was thrashed 7-1 by the Germans in the semi-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte.
Many of them vented their feelings on Facebook after the game. Among them was Tun Kamalul Zaman, who said the Brazilians were overconfident and arrogant. He also said that coach Luiz Felipe Scolari got his tactics wrong for the match.
“It’s all Scolari’s fault. He messed up his line-up. Plus, he didn’t have the services of Thiago Silva and Neymar,” said another netizen Chris Sim.
Stephy Ng felt that the Brazilians were under pressure to win the World Cup and they were lucky to reach the semi-finals.
“During Ronaldo’s time, they were good but now, they need to look back at their mistakes. If Neymar and Thiago Silva were in the match, it could have been better. I agree, Germany did well as their players worked hard and they were all fit,” she said.
Having watched the World Cup since 1962, Jeganathan Perumal said this was the weakest team Brazil had ever produced.
“The current batch are nowhere near the likes of Dunga, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Romario and Roberto Carlos,” he said.
At the other end, Germany fans rejoiced over their team steamrolling past the Selecao.
Kuan Lim Eden Chan said on Facebook that Germany was the only side that played football and showed Brazil who was boss.
“Brazil fielded a team with good individual players but they were not organised at all,” said Chan.
For Faizal Esa, watching the match was like a dream for him.
“Germany’s passing, shots and coordination among players were outstanding. Brazil was not prepared for that kind of strategy,” he said.
