MALACCA: A teenager, believed to have been beaten up by his father because he wanted to get a job to help the family, was found dead in his room in Kampung Jaya, Alor Gajah on Sunday.
Alor Gajah District Deputy Police Chief Supt Abd Rahman Jid said the victim, Muhamad Hafiz Abd Ghani, 17, reportedly had an argument with his father, 52, in their house at about 5pm Saturday.
"The victim wanted to find a job, but the father disagreed," he said.
Abd Rahman said Muhamad Hafiz, who would usually not go against his father's wishes, refused to take no for an answer, which resulted in a heated argument breaking out between them.
He said the father then hit the victim, the eldest of 10 children, with a wooden club, causing him to lose consciousness.
Abd Rahman said Muhamad Hafiz's mother wanted to send him to the hospital for treatment but the father refused, claiming it was not serious.
He said the victim's mother, 38, tried to wake her son for their pre-dawn meal Sunday before beginning their fast, but Muhamad Hafiz did not wake up, reported Bernama.
Siti Habibah said she wanted to go into his room to wake him later, but her husband stopped her, saying that their son could be still tired and sleeping.
''Then I saw my husband leaving the house in a rush without his phone and wallet at about 8.30am.
''I suspected something amiss and went to check on Muhamad Hafiz in his room,'' she said, adding she was shocked to find him lifeless on the bed.
She then lodged a police report at about 9am Sunday.
Abd Rahman said the police were now hunting for the father, who was still missing.
