Policeman hurt, two members of cable-theft gang detained

IPOH: A police corporal sustained a Rambo knife cut on his hand while fighting off a cable-theft suspect in Taman Seri Botani near here.

Ipoh police chief ACP Sum Chang Keong said the suspect, aged 31, believed to be a member of the “Spiderman Gang” was later arrested while climbing up a telecommunication tower in the area at 11.45pm on June 26.

“The unemployed suspect from Chenderiang also has six previous criminal records related to thefts, criminal intimidation and drugs,” he told reporters here, Monday.

He said interrogation on the man led to the arrest of another member of the gang, aged 41, from Kelantan, in Pekan Razaki here the following day.

Both suspects had also admitted to having been involved in more than 20 cases of cable theft, he said.

He said police also seized two pairs of gloves, two Rambo knives, one machete, one cutter, one small saw and a plastic container filled with cut cables.

In another development, he said police also arrested four men aged between 17 and 28, believed to be members of the “Apan Gang” involved in motorcycle thefts over the past two weeks.

“Initial investigation found that the gang was involved in seven motorcycle-thefts before they cannibalised the machines and sold their component parts to their accomplices in Kuala Kangsar,” he said. – Bernama
