PETALING JAYA: Yammy Samat (pic), the mother of Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, the DAP candidate in the recently held Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election, has received a show cause letter from Umno for allegedly campaigning for the opposition party.
It is the third time Umno has sent the letter to Yammy after Pos Malaysia returned the previous letters to the party because of an alleged wrong address.
Yammy said the latest letter was hand-delivered to her by Perak Umno deputy executive secretary Ishak Darus at her home at around 11am yesterday.
The letter was received 20 days after the first one was posted on June 3.
However, she is puzzled as to why the third letter is merely a copy of the first one.
“I thank Perak Umno for personally handing the letter to me after I had waited so long for it.
“But why did they give only a copy of the original one? Should I answer to a copy of an original letter? Where is the original letter?” she asked when interviewed by mStar, the Malay news portal of The Star Media Group.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had said Yammy would be given 14 days to reply to the party’s show cause letter, with the deadline on June 16.
However, this was extended a further two weeks.
Yammy said the content was brief, asking only that she explained why she should not face disciplinary action or sacking for allegedly campaigning for the opposition in the May 31 by-election.
In that poll, Dyana Sofya, 27, was pitted in a straight fight with Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong, 53. She lost to the former MP, who returned with a 238-vote majority to win back the seat he had last won in 2004.
Yammy, a former Perak Wanita Umno secretary, denied she had campaigned against Barisan and would give an explanation to the party within the next one or two days.
“I never campaigned for Dyana,” she said, adding that her presence around the candidate was merely as a mother accompanying her daughter.
