GEORGE TOWN: The family of alleged Muslim convert Teoh Cheng Cheng has made an application to the Syariah High Court for an order to clarify her religious status.
Teoh’s daughter Medelyn Teoh, filed the application through counsel Wan Faridulhadi Mohd Yusoff on Tuesday.
In her grounds for the application, Medelyn said her mother had not proclaimed the syahadah (proclamation of faith).
Medelyn added that Teoh’s boyfriend was the one who had made the application for her mother’s conversion when they had intended to get married but that Teoh had never received the religion conversion certificate, and a new Mykad which stated her new status as a Muslim.
Wan Faridulhadi said the Penang Islamic Affairs Council (MAIPP) would be filing an affidavit in reply at around 11am, Wednesday.
He also said Teoh’s boyfriend would also be present as a witness.
On Monday, a Chinese funeral for Teoh was interrupted when Penang Islamic Religious Department (JAIPP) officers appeared at an apartment in Macallum Street to “claim” the remains of the deceased.
The deceased is alleged to have converted to Islam 17 years ago.
It was reported that Teoh had fallen to her death from an apartment block on Saturday.
