KUALA LUMPUR: Management consultant Cheong Mei Kuen said as banker Hussain Ahmad Najadi lay dying from an assailant’s bullet outside a temple here last year, he whispered to her, “My darling.”
Those were the last words she heard from the late Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder, who Cheong repeatedly referred to as “my husband” in her emotion-packed testimony before Justice Mohd Azman Husin in the High Court here yesterday.
Repeatedly wiping her eyes and speaking in a choked voice, she testified against tow truck driver Koong Swee Kwan, who is charged with murdering Najadi, 75, and attempting to murder Cheong. Koong allegedly committed the offence at a parking lot outside the Kuan Yin temple in Lorong Ceylon here at between 1.30pm and 2pm on July 29 last year.
He is charged under Section 302 and 307 of the Penal Code respectively.
Asked by Koong’s counsel Zamri Idrus, Cheong said she and Najadi registered their marriage in New South Wales, Australia, but their marriage was not registered here.
Recalling the painful incident when questioned by DPP Yusaini Amer Abd Karim during the examination-in-chief, Cheong said was walking with Najadi towards the main gate after discussions with three others at the temple over the purchase of a property.
Suddenly, she heard sounds like firecrackers going off.
“My husband turned to me. ‘My darling,’ he said. All I knew was that I was falling,” said Cheong, adding that she felt her husband falling backwards on her body and an awful pain in her left hand.
She looked up and saw a bespectacled man pointing a gun at her husband.
Cheong said she clasped her husband from the back and tried to shield him by moving her hands up and down his chest, adding that the assailant fired his gun anyway and fled.
She said she felt blood oozing from her thighs as someone carried her in a car to the Tung Shin Hospital. She was later transferred to the Prince Court Medical Centre.
Asked by DPP Yusaini if she could identify the suspect in the courtroom, she pointed straight at the accused in the dock.
