Jais internal probe underway, officers face possible disciplinary action

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) will initiate disciplinary action against its enforcement officers who disrupted a Hindu wedding on Sunday if an internal investigation finds they had breached procedures.

"We are conducting an internal investigation to determine what transpired," said Jais public relations and publications unit deputy director Nurhamizah Othman in a statement.

In the Sunday morning incident, Jais officers disrupted the wedding to question the bride to determine her religious status.

The woman, Zarina Abd Majed, claimed her estranged Muslim convert father had registered her as a Muslim during childhood, but she had been brought up as a Hindu by her mother.

State Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had chastised Jais for disrupting the wedding, and labelled it an "embarrassment".

He had added Jais should have practised humility and not gatecrashed the wedding.

Khalid also said Jais did not adhere to the standard operating procedure, which required the Department to confer with the state government in regards to cases involving non-Muslims and other races.

Nurhamizah reiterated this and said the Jais SOP required state government approval before operations involving non-Muslims were carried out.
