Jais probing bride’s case

PETALING JAYA: The bride who was detained midway during her Hindu wedding ceremony is being investigated for insulting Islam, said the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).

A Malay daily quoted its deputy director Ahmad Zaki Arshad as saying that they were investigating the case under Section 10 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995 for insulting or bringing disrepute to Islam.

He said she was not being investigated for apostasy.

Ahmad Zaki was also quoted as saying that the bride, Zarena Abdul Majid, should hire a lawyer and apply to change her name and religion while her case was being investigated.

“What has happened is that the woman and her siblings are using Muslim names, but they have never practised or been exposed to Islamic teachings as they should have,” he was quoted as saying.

During the incident on Sunday, a bride was detained halfway through her Hindu wedding ceremony in Shah Alam.

She claimed that her father, known as Mahendran, had converted to Islam and used the name Abdul Majid without the family’s knowledge and never kept in touch with her after her parents divorced 25 years ago.

He had registered Zarena’s birth and that of her brother’s as Muslims and kept the documents.

The 32-year-old bride said she had applied to change her religion in her MyKad but the application was rejected as she did not have supporting documents from her father.

She also claimed that she was a practising Hindu.

It was reported that Zarena was taken to the Shah Alam Jais headquarters where her statement was recorded before she was released.
