Gobind: Hudud issue contributed to DAP’s loss

PETALING JAYA: The hudud controversy “contributed significantly” to DAP’s loss in the Teluk Intan by-election, said Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo.

He said that early analysis suggested DAP lost some 25% of the non-Malay votes, adding that it was a shift which called for concern.

“Many pin the cause (of Pakatan’s loss in the by-election) down to the low voter turnout, but there are certainly other factors which need to be considered.

“I am of the view that the controversy around the implementation of hudud by PAS contributed significantly to our loss in Teluk Intan,” Gobind said in a statement yesterday.

In the by-election, DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud lost to Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong by 238 votes.

Gobind said while DAP was thankful to PAS for working with them throughout the campaign, the latter stood firm that they would eventually push ahead with hudud.

Gobind said PAS would table its hudud Bill in Parliament in September despite DAP’s clear objection to it.

He said while he believed DAP made the right decision in fielding Dyana Sofya in the by-election, it could not erase the need for clarity on issues of public concern such as hudud.
