PETALING JAYA: Pictures of a controversial children’s book, which was published in the United States in the 1990s, has gone viral on social media here.
One of the pictures of the book being shared showed a little boy in bed with an older man.
Malaysians have been sharing Whatsapp messages and Facebook posts with pictures of several pages of the book called Alfie’s Home — which claims that homosexuality is caused by sexual abuse and can be cured.
The posts claim that the book is now being circulated in Malaysia and is published by a Malaysian publishing house.
When the book came out in America some 20 years ago, there was an uproar by a few groups, including parents, who found the content offensive.
Home Ministry Undersecretary (Publications, Quranic Texts Control Division) Hashimah Nik Jaafar said they had been alerted about the book several times by the public, especially concerned parents.
“Many have forwarded the Whatsapp messages to us, claiming that their friends had bought the book at a book fair in Putrajaya or in the Putra World Trade Centre.
“However, nobody could come forward and tell us that they actually have the book. We have gone on the ground and checked at all these places as well, but none of the bookstores have the book.
“Until now, there is no proof of this book being circulated here,” she said when contacted yesterday.
She added anyone who had a copy of this book should forward it to the Home Ministry to assist in investigations.
The publishing house concerned had also denied the allegations on its Facebook page, saying it was not the publisher of the book and that it would lodge a report on the matter.
They could not be reached for further comment.
