KUANTAN: The police are trying their best in the search for a British man who went missing in Pulau Tioman on Tuesday, but can only do so much before calling off the search, said Rompin OCPD Deputy Supt Johari Jahaya.
He said a canine unit and the General Operations Force had been deployed to look for Gareth David Huntley, 34, but there was still no sign of the man.
"We are also getting help from the locals to look for him.
“However, if we cannot find him after so many days, what else can we do?" said DSP Johari when asked whether the search would be continued until Huntley was found on Saturday.
He added that the British High Commission has been informed of Huntley's disappearance.
Huntley had been doing volunteering work at the Juara Turtle Project in Kampung Juara, Pulau Tioman.
He was believed to have gone trekking by himself to the Lubuk Teja Waterfalls at about noon on that day.
When he did not return, his friends and other tourists, accompanied by several villagers went to look for him in the jungles near the waterfalls but to no avail.
A police report was subsequently lodged at the Tioman police station at 2.13pm Thursday.
Meanwhile, a relative of Huntley had set up a Facebook page to appeal for public help to look for him.
The Find Gareth Huntley's page administrator was reaching out to social media users with pictures and information in the hope that anyone who was traveling in the area might have seen Huntley or could help look for him.
