PETALING JAYA: Netizens have expressed sympathy towards the mother of an alleged 13-year-old rape victim who potentially faces prosecution for whipping the suspect, despite acknowledging her actions were against the law.
Facebook user Nur Farlyanna wrote, "Why prosecute the mother? ... come on. She's the mother. Understand her feelings.... no parent would stay still if they know who raped their child."
Mei Yoke wrote, "Although it is illegal for people to take own actions when dealing with suspects, the victim's mother should not be severely punished."
Furious, Stephen Riches wrote, "I would also whip the living daylights out any man that abused my child," while Hadiah Hamzah wrote "So what!!! I would chop off his ....! Maybe his head too!!! Bravo to the mom!!"
Many believed the mother had a right to her actions considering the trauma faced by the victim and her family.
Franco Kailsan wrote, "temporary insanity from the shock of finding out her beloved daughter was raped. If she is found guilty, I will personally write to the Agong to appeal for a a royal pardon".
Suthashini Balakrishnan defended the mother, saying, "All she was doing was making an example out of the monster for all the other monsters out there. The other monsters will think twice before they do it again. It's not like the rapist gets punished enough in prison. Either change the laws or applaud her."
In the video, the suspect, in his 30s, was whipped with what looked like a tree branch or a cane.
In the 37-second video, the suspect’s hands and legs were tied and his buttocks exposed, in front of a crowd at Pantai Seri Tujuh, Tumpat, Kelantan on Thursday at about 5pm.
He is one of two men suspected to be involved in the rape.
This man was admitted to the hospital for a blood clot in his head and was later discharged.
According to the police, those arrested for being involved with the whipping could be prosecuted under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt.
The case is not connected to the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old teenage girl by a group of more than 30 men in Ketereh, Kelantan.
