KUALA TERENGGANU: Winning has become a habit for SMK Sultan Sulaiman in the Terengganu RHB-The Star Mighty Minds Challenge.
This year, the school aced the competition again, taking home the champions’ title in the lower secondary category.
Except in 2011, the school always had one winning team in the competition since 2009.
It was a case of second time lucky for classmates Ahmad Syauqi Mohamed Ridhuan, Tan Li Yen and Lam Sin Gee, who finally won the competition in their second attempt.
“The gap between first and second place was so close, so we are delighted to win,” said Form Three student Li Yen.
Li Yen, a public speaker, impressed the judges with her confident speech during the presentation of their creation, a miniature power plant called “The Triple Element World” in the hands-on challenge.
The trio had only just over a week to prepare for the competition due to examinations and they credited their science teacher who gave them much help.
In second place of the same category was SMK Chukai, Kemaman, while SMK Seri Nilam of Kuala Terengganu bagged third place.
The upper secondary category was won by SMK Tengku Mahmud of Besut. Sharifah Iman Solehah Noorzali, Muhammad Izwan Alif Mohd Sukri and Ahmad Arifridhwan Yakcob were the school’s pride as they beat off their challengers to take the top prize.
The northern school enrolled eight teams in both categories, but it was this trio of fifth formers that won.
The champions of both categories took home RM5,000 in cash and a projector each.
The two winning teams will also make their way to the Klang Valley to represent Terengganu in the National Finals after the 14 state challenges are completed.
The competition is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and RHB Banking Group.
