Tasty travel Gabriel offering a new-found favourite of his in Penang.
BALIK PULAU: It was love at first bite for Swedish student Gabriel Granback when he first tasted durian two weeks ago.
Now, the 23-year-old can consume about 10 durians a day either for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
“I first tasted durians in Thailand. I thought it was really good. Later, I did some research on the Internet and found out that in Malaysia, the best durians come from Penang.
“The durians here are on another level. The smell and taste are sensational and they cannot be found in Thailand.
“The taste is like a creamy vanilla fudge with chocolate. I could have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well,” said Granback, a first-time visitor to Penang.
Such was his liking for the King of Fruits that he decided to stay at the Bao Sheng Durian Farm here for four days. “I have spent about RM500 on durians at the farm.
“If you serve it to the people without telling them what it is, they wouldn’t guess it’s a fruit. They will probably think it’s a cake or something else,” he said.
Bao Sheng Durian Farm owner Chang Teik Seng said that many people could not differentiate between the sweet and the bitter durians.
“All taste different with flowery or nutty flavours, and some with hints of citrus or wine. There are also sweet and bitter ones,” he said at his farm in Balik Pulau yesterday.
