Calling for intervention: A group of youths gathering outside the Prime Minister's Department in Putrajaya.
PUTRAJAYA: A group of youths believed to be supporters of sacked Kedah MIC youth council member K. Somasundaram held a protest outside the Prime Minister’s Department here.
During the two-hour protest, which began at about 8am yesterday, the group, which also included Somasundaram, held placards bearing words such as “Save MIC” and complaints against the party’s disciplinary committee chairman Tan Sri K.S. Nijhar.
Somasundaram was expelled last Tuesday over alleged criticism against party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel.
The group also sought the help of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to intervene and help resolve the matter.
They later handed over a memorandum to an aide to the Prime Minister outside the building.
The group had held a similar protest in Bangsar on Saturday.
Somasundaram claimed that Nijhar was a liability to MIC and had done nothing for the party.
“We are protesting because Nijhar had made a decision on his own without going through the party procedures,” he added.
Somasundaram said the group wanted Palanivel to take action against Nijhar and rescind his sacking.
He added that he had only asked Palanivel the reasons for the party’s failure in nominating four senators to the Government.
“Two of the senate posts belonging to MIC fell vacant two years ago, but it has not been taken up.
“I only asked about the delay and the party decided to sack me instead. This is injustice,” he said.
He added that more protests would be held in other towns, including in Teluk Intan.
Nijhar said Somasundaram had continued to defy the warnings given to him by the party.
He said the party constitution allowed the disciplinary committee to expel any member who was deemed to had acted against the party’s interests.
“The expelled member has the right to appeal to the party’s central working committee,” he said.
Nijhar advised MIC members to use proper channels to air their grievances instead of taking to the streets.
