GEORGE TOWN: Ramkarpal Singh, 38, is set to follow in his father's footsteps in Bukit Gelugor.
The third son of the former DAP chairman Karpal Singh is the party's pick to stand for the by-election in Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat on May 25.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng made the announcement after launching the DAP Bukit Gelugor by-election operations centre in Jalan Masjid Negeri here on Saturday.
Last Monday, Ramkarpal confirmed that his name was among the short listed candidates to vie for the seat.
Ramkarpal might be facing a six-way fight in the fray, which will see the participation of Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan, PAS member and retiree Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abd Sathar, independent candidate Mohd Yacoob Mohd Noor and a candidate from the Penang Front Party.
The candidate from Barisan Nasional has yet to be announced.
The Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election is being held following the death of the Karpal in a road accident on April 17.
The Election Commission has fixed May 12 as nomination day while early voting was set for May 21 and polling day for May 25.
The late Karpal who was former DAP chairman, won the seat in the 2013 general election with a majority of 42,706 votes, beating BN candidate Teh Beng Yeam, who polled 13,597.
