Boy hurt in acid attack on couple

ALOR SETAR: A mother watched in horror as her eight-year-old boy screamed in pain after his face was hit by acid in an attack believed to be intended to harm a couple running a food stall here.

Abdul Hakim Wafi Abdul Razak was buying nasi lemak at the stall in front of his school Sekolah Rendah Islam Islah at about 7am, when suddenly, two men hurled the acid his way, resulting in his suffering 3% burns on his face.

It is believed that the suspects, who were on a scooter and wearing helmets, were targeting the 60-year-old stall owner Shamsudin Samat and his wife Fatimah Shafie, 46.

Shamsudin suffered 17% burns to his body and face, while Fatimah suffered 2% burns on her back.

Abdul Hakim’s mother Nazriah Abdul Rahman, 41, when met at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, said she was waiting in the car for her son to buy his breakfast before driving off to work.

“I saw two men on a scooter, stopping near the stall. One got down and splashed acid at the stall owner and his wife.

“I saw my son crying out loudly after some of the acid splashed on him.

“I immediately took him to the Malaysian Civil Defence Department nearby and they rushed him to the hospital,” said Nazriah.

She added that the stall has only been operating for two days prior to the incident.

Fatimah’s son Mohd Fairuz Azimuth Osman, 25, said his mother had married Shamsudin about five months ago.

“I have not even met my stepfather yet because my mother had moved out of our house in Hutan Kampung to Pendang, to live with my stepfather after their marriage.

“I only knew about the incident after a relative called me,” he said.
