KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak says the MCA must be in the Cabinet as the voice and conscience of the Chinese community to make Barisan Nasional stronger as it charts a better future for Malaysia.
Welcoming the decision of the party to rejoin the Cabinet, the Prime Minister said: “The details and the timing will be revealed by me but MCA cannot stay outside of Government. They have to be part and parcel of the Barisan Government.
“Together, we will devise policies that will be fair to all communities,” he added when launching MCA’s “Stronger Together” campaign at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College here yesterday.
The campaign is to foster unity – not just among party members but also the Chinese community and all Malaysians as well.
The Barisan chairman said that MCA’s willingness to carry out internal transformation was timely, allowing the party to continue to be relevant and get a place in the Chinese community.
“Starting with internal changes, MCA must see all its existing strengths and be brave enough to accept all the shortcomings that are still besetting the party until now,” he added.
Najib said the relationship among Barisan parties must be based on sincerity and trust, and MCA was an important partner in the “Barisan alliance” that had resulted in Malaysia being a success story.
He paid tribute to the Chinese community, saying “they have made a massive contribution to the development of the country. There’s no doubt about that”.
He reminded MCA to be prepared for the next general election by cleaning its membership list and identifying candidates who can win, and urged party members to continue to work hard to woo the people.
“Although it is easier said than done, they must be prepared to allow the best candidate to stand in each constituency,” Najib said.
He also said the Federal Government was prepared to make adjustments to its policies to ensure that all races be treated fairly.
“If the Chinese community needs us to look back at our policies and make some adjustments, and if the request is fair, we will certainly give serious consideration to MCA’s request,” he said.
The Prime Minister said the country’s top 40 richest people could not have succeeded without the support and aid from the policies of the Federal Government.
