Esscom: Groups targeting Suluks to stir confusion

KOTA KINABALU: Certain groups want to create trouble and confusion by targeting Sabah’s Suluk community, says Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) director-general Datuk Mohamad Mantek.

He said the move by some individuals to fly self-styled Sulu sultanate flags at their houses near Lahad Datu was to influence the community.

“This is nothing more than a provocation by some individuals. The Malaysian security forces will act against anyone flying such flags,” he said at a meeting with Suluk community leaders in the east coast Tawau district on Wednesday.

On April 22, security forces arrested a 57-year-old man claiming to be a representative of the self-styled Sulu sultan at a house in Lahad Datu.

The man, holding a photocopy of a Malaysian identity card, was held in the Long Danau settlement near Kampung Tanduo, where Malaysian forces battled with Sulu gunmen intruders just over a year ago.

Sulu sultanate flags were pinned on the walls of the house when Malaysian security personnel raided it on Tuesday.
