Anti-GST rally: Cops give green light after organisers agree to conditions

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will allow Thursday's rally against the Good and Service Tax (GST) to proceed but advised organisers to adhere to certain conditions to ensure the safety of participants.

"Participants are not allowed to bring weapons or children to the rally.

"They should also follow and respect instructions from police personnel on duty, who are there to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the smoothness of the proceedings," City police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh told a press conference at the police headquarters here Wednesday.

He said police were expecting some 15,000 people to turn up for the rally, to be held near Dataran Merdeka here between 2pm and 5pm.

He reminded organisers that protesters could gather near the historic location but were not allowed on the field and podium.

They also were not allowed to use hailers, make speeches and shout party slogans while walking to Dataran Merdeka from various meeting points, he added.

"We have met the organisers four times and they have agreed with our conditions.

"We will ensure the safety of the public and all involved in the rally," he said.
