PETALING JAYA: Three students were critically injured as the bus they were on skidded and plunged into a ditch at KM25.1 of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), a few kilometres after the Jalan Duta toll plaza Sunday.

About 30 students from International Islamic University of Malaysia (UIA) in Gombak were were on their way to a team-building program when the bus driver fell unconscious at the wheel at around 9.40am Sunday.

The bus then went off the road for about 200m before plunging into a ditch.

"We panicked when the bus flipped to the side. My first thought was to climb out of the window to save myself," said the accounting student, adding that the driver regained consciousness after the accident.

It is believed that Nik Hasfadhilah Ghazali - one of the three critically-injured students - was stuck underneath the bus before firefighters came to her rescue.

Another student, Mohd Farhan Affandi Mohd Yunus, said he was the first person to climb out of the bus after the collision and expressed relief to have escaped only with minor injuries to his legs and waist.

"My friend Amirul Hairi Aduka was badly injured after his face slammed into the window," said the 21-year-old engineering student.

Nik Hasfadhilah and Amirul were among 29 students who were sent to Hospital Sungai Buloh for treatment, with another male student being treated at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Three students, including Nik Hasfadhilah, were treated in the Red Zone area for critical injuries while five students, including Amirul, were treated in the Yellow Zone area after sustaining serious injuries.
