Karpal’s family says ‘thank you’

GEORGE TOWN: Family members of the late Karpal Singh were touched by the overwhelming support for the Tiger of Jelutong.

Karpal’s eldest son Jagdeep Singh Deo, a state executive councillor, said he was awed by the “unprecedented” crowd who showed up to pay their respects on Sunday.

“We are so proud of the recognition and appreciation of Penangites and Malaysians who came to witness the passing of a legend on his final journey,” he said at a press conference at Komtar here yesterday.

Also present were his mother Gurmit Kaur, brother Mankarpal Singh Deo and other state DAP leaders and members.

“We also wish to place on record our gratitude to the state government for according my father a public funeral with state honours,” said Jagdeep.

He also thanked the funeral committee headed by state DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow as well as party members and voluntary patrol unit members for managing the crowd during Karpal’s funeral.

Karpal, 74, and his long-time aide Michael Cornelius, 39, were killed in a road accident at the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung, Perak, last Thursday.

Jagdeep also apologised for Sunday’s emotional outbursts at the Batu Gantong crematorium after the family appealed to the public and press members for privacy to perform the last rites.

Karpal’s ashes, he said, were scattered in the sea off Jalan Greenhall on Monday.

“The sea from Straits Quay to the Esplanade was calm when Karpal’s ashes were placed in the water,” he added.
