Focus on delineation exercise first, DAP and PAS urge PKR

PETALING JAYA: DAP and PAS have poured cold water on a proposal by PKR to finalise seat allocation among Pakatan Rakyat parties by March next year.

Serdang MP Dr Ong Kian Ming, who was DAP’s election strategist for the 13th general election, said Pakatan should focus on the constituency delineation exercise to ensure it is done fairly.

“Our priority should be to see that the delineation exercise is done fairly by the Election Commission. Only then will we even know how many seats there will be.

“This should be our priority before we even think about the allocation of seats,” he said.

PAS information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar said it had not been discussed in any Pakatan meeting.

“This is just his (PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s) suggestion and it must be raised in a meeting with the Pakatan Rakyat leadership before any decision is made,” he said when contacted.

Saifuddin said seat negotiations with DAP and PAS would start immediately and decided this year.

“This will allow the chosen candidates to begin their work early at their respective constituencies and build a good rapport with voters,” he said during a press conference yesterday.

On how practical it would be to decide seat allocations as early as this year, Saifuddin said the fundamentals of how to do this had already been put in place during the previous elections.

The EC is expected to carry out a delineation exercise this year. Once started, the process has to be completed within two years.

The last delineation exercise was completed in March 2003.
