Aquarium worker jailed for molesting step-niece

KUALA LUMPUR: An aquarium worker was jailed six months and fined RM2,000 for molesting his step-niece while she was asleep.

The 24-year-old man admitted to have gone to her bedroom in Cheras at about 3am last Friday.

The 16-year-old student testified that she felt him touching her arm before moving on to her private parts. When she tried to stop her uncle, he fondled her right breast several times.

The student later disclosed this to her friends and the school counselling teacher, which subsequently led to the victim lodging a police report.

Police arrested the suspect the same day.

Pleading for leniency yesterday, the man said his condition was “not normal” when he committed the deed.

“I committed this offence without being aware of it. I am sorry, please forgive me. I promise that I will not commit this again,” he said while pleading with magistrate Zuraini Abdul Razak to only impose a fine on him. “This is my first offence, madam. Please reduce my sentence.”

However, DPP Haderiah Siri asked the court not to yield in view of the gravity of the offence.

“I apply to the court to consider the feelings of the victim who was in fear and traumatised over the incident,” said Haderiah.

The DPP added that the court should also consider the relationship of the accused with the victim, and that such offences involving people known to the such victims and their family were “rampant”.

In sentencing, the magistrate said she considered the seriousness of the offence involving a minor.

“You are supposed to be responsible for taking care of the victim, not traumatise her. Although you are a first offender, you may repeat this offence again as you are staying in the same house with her,” she said.

The man was given a six-month jail term starting from the date of arrest and fined RM2,000 in default two months’ jail.
